Dr. Andrew Huberman stresses the importance of hormone optimization to support optimal body functioning.

Low testosterone is associated with many negatives like the decline in libido, muscle mass, obesity, low bone mass, fatigue, etc.; therefore, taking supplements to ensure healthy levels are important.

But incorporating supplements should be done by consulting your physician to ensure all health variables are considered.

However, Dr. Huberman also highlights the base foundation for good health should be set right for the supplements to work properly. Including a healthy diet, working out, getting good sleep, reducing stress, and maintaining healthy relationships is the way to go.

To ensure you receive the full potential of the supplement properties, choosing the best products is crucial. Dr. Huberman is associated with the Live Momentous brand that assures the highest quality products.

1. Creatine

Andrew Huberman has been taking Creatine since his college days.

Creatine has been a popular supplement for decades as a performance enhancer for athletes of all levels. Creatine is an amino acid derivative naturally synthesized in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. (1)

Creatine supplementation is associated with various health benefits such as increased strength, lean body mass, brain health and function, muscle morphology, and many more. An important role is that it serves as an ATP backup reserve in phosphorylated form. (2)

The importance of Creatine as a testosterone supplement is that it converts testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the more biologically active androgen. And DHT is important for all the major sexual development, characteristics, and abilities.

In this interview at 5:16, Andrew Huberman and Dr. Andy Galpin discuss the importance of Creatine as one of the main supplements. Andrew also mentions that his current daily creatine dosage is about 5 g.

Examples of brands;

2. Tongkat Ali

tongkat ali testosterone supplement

Eurycoma longifolia, commonly called Tongkat Ali in Malaysia, is a herbal medicinal plant found in Southeast Asian countries. (3)

Tongkat Ali roots, often called ‘Malaysian Ginseng,’ is an adaptogen and an anti-aging remedy. Many modern supplements in the market feature Tongkat Ali for their properties to improve libido and energy, restore hormonal balance (cortisol/testosterone levels) and enhance both sports performance and weight loss.

What Tongkat Ali does as a testosterone supplement is stimulate testosterone synthesis to increase free testosterone (the active form) by releasing it from the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) it is bound to when in the blood.

So it restores and maintains normal testosterone levels within the normal range. (4)

Free testosterone is extremely important in many biological processes, including libido, mood, muscle growth, and strength, metabolism, and body composition.

In this video at 1:40:14, Andrew Huberman talks about free testosterone and the benefits of Tongkat Ali. And in this video, at 2:50, Andrew says 400 mg of Tongkat Ali daily will help increase testosterone levels.

Here are a few pointers from Andrew Huberman on taking Tongkat Ali;

  • Preferably take it in the morning due to its mild stimulant effect.
  • Scale the dose based on body weight and lab results.
  • Take it every day instead of intermittently to ensure assured effects. Tongkat Ali effects appear when you enter the second and third month of usage.
  • There is no need to cycle it unless your blood tests show anomalies like a spike in liver enzymes.
  • Wait about 12 weeks or so before getting a blood test to evaluate the effects of it on your hormone levels.

Examples of brands;

3. Fadogia Agrestis

Fadogia Agrestis (Rubiaceae), also referred to as a black aphrodisiac, is a medicinal shrub native to Nigeria. (5)

The stems of these plants used as sexual invigorators are scientifically proven.

A study done in 2005 showed that rats orally administered with F. agrestis had significantly increased serum testosterone concentrations and was suggestive of dose-dependence.

The same study above also reported that the mice had improved sexual health and performance, significantly prolonged the ejaculatory latency.

As a testosterone supplement, F. Agrestis works by increasing the release of Luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary glands. In turn, LH will work on the release of more testosterone. Increased LH results in increased total testosterone.

In this interview featuring Andrew Huberman and Dr. Kyle Gillet, they discuss the function of F.agrestis at 1:22:09. Also, at 1:25:34, Andrew Huberbam shares details on his dosage, saying he’s been taking 600 mg of F.agrestis per day for a while now but he has been cycling it like 8-12 weeks on and a few works off.

In the same interview, Andrew also makes a note that his blood work did not indicate any toxicity on the F.agrestis dosage he has been taking.

Examples of brands;

4. Zinc

Zinc is a basic mineral essential to a multitude of biochemical functions of a cell, including DNA synthesis, building proteins, growth of cells, healing damaged tissue, and supporting a healthy immune system. (6)

Zinc deficiencies are associated with growth failure and negative effects on Epidermal, gastrointestinal, central nervous, immune, skeletal, and reproductive systems. (7)

As concluded in this study, serum levels of Zinc positively correlated with serum testosterone levels.

Since Zinc deficiency can affect the release of gonadotropins, such as follicle stimulating Hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone, the release of testosterone is also affected.

Zinc supplementation is necessary only in case of a dietary deficiency because excess Zinc than required does not affect testosterone levels. And Zinc picolinate seems to be a highly bioactive form of Zinc. (8)

You can hear Andrew Huberman’s explanation of Zinc in this podcast clip. Although his dosage is not specified, the zinc supplement by the Momentous Brand Andrew is associated with, contains 15 mg of Zinc per serving size.

Examples of brands;

5. Boron

Boron is a trace mineral micronutrient that is involved in many vital metabolic roles in the growth and maintenance of bone, wound healing, positively impacting estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D levels of the body, improving magnesium absorption, and many more. (9)

According to this study conducted on eight healthy males, it was shown that there was an increase in free serum testosterone after the oral intake of 10 mg of boron over just seven days.

In this interview with Dr. Kyle Gillet at 1:12:45, you can see a brief discussion on boron and how it affects the hormone profile, whereas, in this video at 3:09:46, Andrew Huberman says he takes around 2-4 mg of boron per day.
